Commissions and Awards

 

Commissioned Anthems and Hymns

 

“Open Our Hands, O God”, an anthem for a cappella choir, was commissioned by the Trinity Christian College Concert Choir on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Trinity Christian College, Palos Heights, IL and was first sung on October 2, 2009.

“Would I Have Answered When You Called”, a hymn concertato for choir, organ and congregation, was commissioned by the River Terrace Christian Reformed Church Choir, Lansing, MI, in 2007.

KEENE MILL, a hymn tune set to Thomas Troeger’s “Rising Water Always Flowing”, was commissioned by the Springfield Methodist Church, Springfield, VA, in 2004 in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

“We Will Rejoice!”, an anthem for a cappella choir, was commissioned by the Calvin Alumni Choir, Grand Rapids, MI, in 2003.

“View the Present Through the Promise”, a hymn concertato for choir, organ, and congregation, was commissioned by the Calvin College Campus Choir, Grand Rapids, MI, in 2002.

“O God We, Kneel before Your Throne”, an anthem for choir, brass and organ, was commissioned by Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI, for the 125th anniversary celebration of the two institutions and first sung on March 5, 2001.

“Many Colors Paint the Rainbow”, an anthem for choir and piano, was commissioned by the Calvin Alumni Choir on the occasion of their summer tour in 2000 to Asia. It was first sung by the choir on May 21, 2001.

“O God, We Raise Our Voices”, an anthem for choir and organ, was commissioned by Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church, Grand Rapids, MI, and first sung by the church’s choir on May 31, 1998.

“Let Us Sing God’s Praise, Rejoicing: Alleluia!” was commissioned by the Grand Rapids, MI, Christian School Association Music Department for their winter Choral Festival. It was first sung on February 1, 1998 by over 700 junior and senior high school students.

“The House of the Lord”, an oratorio for soprano, tenor, choir and orchestra, was commissioned by the Calvin Oratorio Society, Grand Rapids, MI, on occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Society. It was first performed on March 23, 1996.

“God with Us”, a congregational hymn set to the tune DEN BOER, was commissioned by the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheboygan, WI, to celebrate the church’s centennial year in 1989. The text is by Roy Hopp and the music is by friend and fellow son of the congregation, Jack Ippel.


                                                                          
 Awards

Was one of six finalists (out of a total of 753 submissions) and received a “Special Mention” award for a hymn tune submitted to the St. Paul’s Cathedral (London, England) Millenium Hymn Competition (1999). A second tune was also submitted to the competition and was chosen as one of the top sixteen hymn tunes submitted.

Composer of the winning hymn tune in a contest sponsored by the Fairmont Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, OH in 1986 celebrating the church’s 70th anniversary.
